Terrace design ideas, inspiration & pictures

A house without a balcony, porch or terrace will look so deserted and gloomy. Here in this article, we talk about what they are, what are the types of balconies, porch or terraces exist and what are the stylings we can apply to them to make them look better and finally the steps to design them.

What is a balcony?

A balcony is a platform on the outside of the building enclosed by walls or balustrades, supported by columns or console brackets. The platform is projecting outside from the wall of a building and is located above the ground floor. They are generally small and not used for entertainment purposes.

What is a Porch?

It is a covered shelter projecting in front of the entrance of the house or building. The structure is external to the walls of the building but it may be enclosed in certain types of frames including walls, columns or screens, extending from the main structure

What is a Terrace?

A terrace is a paved outdoor area adjoining a house, generally used for dining or recreation. Common materials employed when building a terrace  include concrete, stone, bricks but also tiles or cobbles. They are often decorated with plants and outdoor furniture.

What types of balconies exist?

Balconies are classified into three types based on structure and space.

True balcony

They have a deck floor and railings. These balconies have a wider floor than other types of balconies. it can be walked on and supports a reasonable amount of people, furniture, decorations, plants, etc.It might be sometimes used for chilling out as a couple or a few friends.

These balconies have a narrow deck and rail, which are designed to support the weight of plants and planters. They are also functional in the use of creating a support system for those wanting to stand in their doorways and lean upon the railing to view the outdoors.

Faux balconies have a rail with no deck floor. The faux balcony covers either windows or doors. A faux balcony can be mounted at a maximum of 4" away from wall. They are designed for decorative as well as safety purposes.

What types of porches exist?

Unlike balconies, these are created for a purpose and it varies between individuals. Here are a few types of them.

Front porch

The most traditional kind of them all, the front porch is popular with homeowners who want to keep up with the neighborhood or create a welcoming entry for guests. They are hot in both new construction and remodels, as homeowners long for a better sense of community. Even a modest-sized one gives you the chance to enhance the sense of entry into your house. A simple portico porch can protect guests while they wait at the front door and provide dimension to a flat-faced house

Back Porch

Usually more informal than a front porch, a back porch offers more flexibility. They can be a great way to connect your kitchen to the garden outside, a place to enjoy water or nature views, or a protected spot to watch the kids play in the yard. Adding a cooking area or mudroom to it keeps rooms inside clean and organized. If you love to garden, a potting shed, planters or window boxes are nice extras. Some back porches can be combined with a deck above so you have more than one way to enjoy the outdoors

Wraparound Porch

A wraparound porch can extend the living space of a casual family room, or it can give guests a spot to enjoy the garden when connected to a more formal living or dining room. You can create different "zones" on a wraparound porch, with a seating area for guests and a lounge area with a chaise for reading and relaxing. You can even include a gazebo that creates a destination spot and adds architectural interest. In a country setting, a wraparound porch can also establish a stronger connection between your home and the surrounding landscape.

Screened porch

if you enjoy breezes and the fragrances from your garden but don't want to worry about the bugs or harsh sunlight, a screened porch is definitely the way to go. Screens allow you to use your porch more often and make it better suited for more activities. Many porch screens are made from fiberglass mesh (easy to work with but can tear easily) or aluminum mesh (resists corrosion but can discolor over time). There are also tightly woven sun-blocking screens that offer significant shading, pet-proof screens for homeowners with high-energy animals or children, and security screens made from heavy mesh steel mounted in tough frames for those concerned about keeping out intruders.

What types of terrace exist?

Terraces are categorized based on size and the area that it occupies.

A bench terrace is shelf like embankment of earth with a level or nearly level top and a step or vertical downhill face constructed along the contour of sloping land. A steep slope is converted into a series of steps, with horizontally or nearly horizontal ledges, and vertical or almost vertical walls between the ledges. In very stable soils, the walls may be held by vegetation, and in others some structural walls are necessary, as brick, stone or timber.

It involves construction of bund passing through the points having same elevation (contour). The bund may have closed or open ends. The main objective is to impound the surface run-off and hold it until it infiltrates, closed end bunds are built in low rainfall areas with high permeability and open end bund is used for soil with moderate permeability.whatever be the the case, contour bunding is not suitable for slopes steeper than 6%

In heavy rainfall areas, the water can not be impounded to percolate into soil. As such slight gradient is provided in channel above the bund to safely divert water to one side of field. Then the water is discharged safely from grassed waterway.
