Conservatory

A person who likes having a greenery as a showcase, will like to have a conservatory in their porch or backyard. It may be a hobby for some people too to have small glass house built in to grow and protect plants. This article will tell about the types of conservatory and the different styles that can be applied to it.

What is a conservatory?

It is a room dedicated for the sole purpose of growing, cultivating and protecting plants and flowers. It is mostly designed by glass doors and walls. It also has ventilations on the roof for sunlight and air to circulate around the plants. They are classified into three types based on hobby, taste of nature and  leisure..

Victorian conservatory 

They are the most popular type of conservatory and are distinguished by their pitched roof, its facets and curved appearance. This allows maximum space in the area. This is quite spacious and relaxing at the same time.

Edwardian conservatory 

Similar to the victorian, this is based on a rectangular floor plan and looks to maximise the space around. The difference is that it has a bright open space along with the four sided pitched roof. This combo forms the perfect spot to have a leisure time.  

Orangeries  conservatory

They are use for planting exotic fruits. It forms a perfect platform to showcase some of the beautiful fruits around the place all in one location. This could sometimes turn out to be an exhibition too. These conservatories have red brick pillars and glass walls opening up a bright, big space for the plants. 

Gable conservatory 

They have a triangular front and a rectangular floor plan. Their front windows extend to meet the roofs, giving them the required light and space. 

Loggia conservatory

It was inspired from the italian renaissance and also developed based on british architecture. With a combination of the two, they have a roofed gallery and an inclined room open to air on one side and supported by ornate columns on the other. This is the type that stands out different from the other conservatories.

Lean-to conservatory 

It consists of a rectangular roof that leans on to the main area. They are uncomplicated to build and are suitable for all kinds of houses. It is also less expensive and hence preferred by many.

Garden Room conservatory 

Same as the lean-to, the structure of this room has leaning roof onto the main area. The only difference between lean-to and garden is that, the area in the garden is big enough for people to come and have a relaxing time. The structure. 

Combination 

As the name suggests, they are a combination of Gable, Victorian and Edwardian styles and can be modified to suit a person’s taste.

Asian 

They are mostly roofless or have a small roof. They are more open to the outside and are spacious. The design have a touch of asian culture and tradition in the case of furnitures and lamps.  Some might also have a curved short pathway adding to the beauty.

Classic

This style is more usual with tables and chairs as the furnitures. All of them are roof covered, but open to the front to a garden or a swimming pool with an alluring scene to relax and spend some private time. 

Mediterranean 

It is a combination of the classic and modern styles. They come with various furniture around them and they purely depend on an individual’s taste. Some may be small meeting place or some may be even a small library. 

 Industrial

The color patterns used are neutral. The materials used are metals and their alloys along with glass too. The design is that of a corporate company that looks too formal. This kind of conservatory is useful at private workplaces when a break is required from working long hours.

Modern 

They consist of vibrant colors but the walls and roofs are mostly made of glass. It follows a rectangular floor and roof plan. The furniture are more elegant with the best materials used. It is a luxurious conservatory and has many ornamental walls and pillars around.

Steps to design them 

There are 4 basic steps to design the conservatory. Any project takes about 3-4 months to complete on an average. 

1. Planning The scope of the work and the rough estimates are planned by the contractor. A list of what are the materials and furnitures required are noted down, with careful consideration of the surroundings.
