The client requested a simple solution to create added shade for those hot, balmy tropical days that are part and parcel of living ion the sub-tropical conditions in Durban, South Africa. The patio faces East, and the morning sun can really make the area uncomfortable, necessitating increased air conditioning in the adjacent lounge. By extending the shade, the lounge area would thus be substantially cooler in summer, and in winter it is possible to retract the roof, allowing more sunshine (and warmth) into the lounge.
The curved cantilever roof above the patio presented somewhat of a challenge. It would be impossible to attach a square, retractable structure to it. Hence the only solution was to make use of a freestanding structure. We presented two options.
The first was the Dakhla Pilares by SAHARA, Spain—complete with fully automated and motorised retractable roof, LED lights, and even Qatif drop screens with Soltis 96 fabric. We also proposed the Pergola de Sol freestanding as a more economical alternative. The Pergola de Sol is manually operated, and can also be fitted with manually operated drop screens.
Pergola de Sol is a more economical pergola with a manually operated retractable canvass roof. For more images and information on this project, please see our Idea Files with the name 'Project: Patio Evolution.'
