Growhouse/

Shortlisted for the NaCSBA 'Self Build on a Shoestring' Competition 2017.

At 47sqm the standard Grow/House is a single storey pitched roof dwelling. Due to the small space standards, the idea draws on Danish design principles to utilise light and functionality to create spacious living in a small building footprint whilst prompting a healthy lifestyle for the resident. The driving concept behind the Grow/house is to provide a modular design, which can be reconfigured with minimal alteration.

With three distinct spaces, different aesthetic are applied to celebrate these individual activities: The GROW area is a clean minimal aesthetic, plywood lined walls and timber tongue and grove floors provide a light and clean environment with minimal maintenance required. The EARTH space although still plywood lined achieves a more intimate feel with full height windows providing ample light with still a sense of privacy. The RAIN area is a prefabricated ‘pod,’ and provides all of the services elements of a dwelling such as the bathroom and kitchen facilities.

COMMUNITY DESIGN: The design of the project creates pockets of smaller communities on a cluster ‘loop’. Allowing the residents to feel a strong connection to their local neighbours and a further relationship to the wider community. A square pulled apart to create a public square; an extended ‘urban living-room’ for the residents. A ‘grow’ area in the centre provides a social gathering space and is formed of hit and miss open timber slats and CLT frame. The formation of the local pocket creates public/ semiprivate and private areas. Each pocket is connected visually to one another from ‘House’ to ‘House’ with allotments running through the site on an east / west axis. This forms the main pedestrian routes through the site. Each Grow/House is connected to a grey-water rainwater collection tank beneath the ‘grow’ areas.
