This kitchen has us all divided by its ability to feel completely authentic and traditional on the one hand, yet very out there and pushing the boundaries on the other. House of Hackney is a truly English brand adored by trendy, well-heeled East Londoners, it’s where they go to buy bold and fabulous patterned interiors. Palm trees, monkeys, blousy blooms and wacky takes on traditional English patterns. The company is owned by Frieda Gormley and her husband Javvy Royle, a couple who set trends and have built up an incredibly cool brand and a flagship store on Shoreditch High Street.
When they decided to have a Classic English deVOL Kitchen we were very proud and excited to see how they would interpret our cupboards in their home. Their newly renovated house in London Fields, Hackney is a testament to their style and their love of traditional and beautiful interiors. They wanted a colonial feel to the house with an air of old fashioned tradition, cool tiled floors, parquet, plants, rich warm fabrics and wallpapered walls. Frieda and Javvy chose to have their cupboards mostly freestanding, just how they were intended all those years ago when Paul, the owner of deVOL, first designed them. A pair of pot cupboards either side of the Italian Ilve range cooker, an island with a sink looking out into the garden and a big pantry cupboard to house everything else. Such a simple way to have a kitchen yet so practical, and not only beautiful but more of a furnished room feel than a kitchen. The rest of the kitchen was filled with a combination of classic items that created a really welcoming room, traditional French café chairs, old fashioned English crockery, trailing vines and a banquette style seating area of plush velvet and buttons. It was a cross between a French country home and a really posh English pub, a funny combination I know but it proved to us that Frieda and Javvy really know how to make their house into a home with unrivalled style, comfort and quirky panache.
We have just finished a brand new Classic English kitchen for the owners of House of Hackney! It mixes their iconic bold prints with our bespoke cupboards and the result is a pretty cool looking space.
The owners of this home opted for our Classic English range because they had a few awkward little corners and bespoke furniture is the best option for that. We created some lovely cupboards and the once useless corners became handy little storage options.
The large island provides lots of extra handy storage and it has an integrated copper sink along with one of our own aged brass Ionian taps, made in collaboration with Perrin and Rowe. Behind is a long run of full height cupboards, perfect for storing away all your bits of kitchenware.
Our Classic English cabinets have been painted in Linen, a warm off-white shade from our collection, it's not too white or too yellow, it's just right. It works really well in this Victorian townhouse and leaves the emphasis on the bold wallpaper. The range cooker is by ILVE, an Italian company that supplies beautiful kitchen appliances.
This East London home had bags of character and personality, it was a real pleasure to be able to design a kitchen for a space with so many interesting features. These elegant green doors were particularly lovely and led out to a pretty patio filled with tropical and unusual plants.
Our Aged Brass Ionian tap, made with Perrin and Rowe, looks perfectly at home in this eclectic kitchen designed for the owners of House of Hackney. Everything in this kitchen is bold and dramatic and the tap sits quietly in the middle of the room, perfectly timeless.
This huge island is a lovely focal piece in this busy room and provides lots of extra storage for the owners as well as housing the kitchen sink and area for seating. Islands are a great piece in a kitchen because they are so versatile in their uses, they can be used for prepping food, storing items in, washing up, eating, just sitting and chilling against.
There is a lovely dining area in the new Classic House of Hackney kitchen and we love the sky lights that keep the room feeling so bright and fresh. The addition of the greenery by the sky light is a lovely touch and really brings the outside in.
Cleverly layered textures and prints, beautiful substantial deVOL cupboards and little nods to the Moroccan theme running throughout this home have all come together to create quite an original and wonderful kitchen. We love seeing our bespoke Classic English furniture in this lovely room.
