elementalKitchen by Charlie Smallbone and deVOL
A Regency London townhouse with original features, high ceilings and more character than seems fair, this deVOL showroom in historic St. John’s Square, Clerkenwell is a special place and needed to be decorated and styled with care.
The Sebastian Cox Kitchen range doesn’t seem at first glance to be the best choice for this house, but we needed a display so had to come up with a workable kitchen from this range. To our relief and amazement, the Sebastian Cox cupboards in all their cool rustic glory just took up the challenge beautifully and the room became a glamorous and glittering kitchen with real credibility and a suitable style to work within a period property. We decided to introduce a new tint that would work well with the existing colours in the house, so taking the Clerkenwell Blue from our Real Shaker range we tried it and it looked just the part, so a new colour was born. We have used copper worktops in our Sebastian Cox Kitchens many times before and know they look great so we went for a full-length copper worktop with seamlessly integrated copper sink, creating a full run of matt coloured copper with a beautifully aged patina, a little bit of sparkle but nothing too brash. This copper is also continued on the back walls in between the heavily moulded windows to create a practical and bold splashback. The use of all this copper was to create a more dramatic and reflective feel to a shady room that needed something grand to give it gravitas.
We opted for a London Glazed Wall Cupboard from our Shaker range instead of using the woven glazed cupboards from the Sebastian Cox range, although they are quite beautiful and light and airy in their construction we felt this room needed a more substantial cupboard. The two quite different style of cupboards worked perfectly giving everyone the opportunity to mix and match deVOL cupboards to create a really unique kitchen in their own home whatever the age and style of property.
Our new Sebastian Cox Kitchen by deVOL in our St. John's Square showroom is the first kitchen to be installed on the first floor and we couldn't be happier with how it has turned out. It's a little bit glamorous, a little bit modern and yet still simple and almost rustic.
We love pairing our Sebastian Cox cabinets with copper, it always looks wonderful and really helps to achieve the urban rustic look we're after. In our new kitchen display at St. John's Square, Clerkenwell, we decided to include an aged copper worktop, integrated sink and tall backsplash. The result is a pretty special looking space!
We are so pleased with how the Sebastian Cox Kitchen has fitted so comfortably into St. John's Square, its rustic cool look has worked unexpectedly well. We decided against using any woven backed pieces in this room and opted for a London Glazed Wall Cupboard from our Shaker range, the proportions of this cupboard work better in such a grand room and painting everything blue just brought the whole space together. Our ranges all work in conjunction with each other and this surprising mix is testament to the ease with which you can make your own deVOL Kitchen quite unique.
A close up of our aged copper integrated sink, a beautifully luxurious addition to any kitchen. The brass tap is by an Italian company and you can also spy the aged brass hanging rail behind. A mix of metals keeps this kitchen feeling modern and we really love how the glimmers on everything.
We installed an integrated Smeg oven and induction hob into this new kitchen. It's little and neat and works perfectly in this kitchen which is on the smaller side, something chunkier would have felt out of place. The aged brass hanging rail is attached to a shelf, a perfect little spot to pop your regularly used bits of kitchenware, keeping them in an easy to find and reach place.
The walls in our new kitchen have been painted in Oval Room Blue by Farrow and Ball. It's a smokey blue that feels aged and glamorous so it was the perfect fit. We love our Sebastian Cox cupboards but we also love all the little extras in this room that make the space feel so special, like the original fireplace, the carefully selected paintings and the wonderful potted plants.
Clerkenwell Blue is a paint colour from our Shaker collection and is featured heavily in the main showroom at St. John's Square. We thought it was only right to continue this theme in the new kitchen display upstairs so we created a tint in the same shade for the Sebastian Cox cabinets. We only ever use a dye on this range of cupboards, we love being able to see the texture of the English beech underneath and a paint would just be too heavy for that.
We love to place the sink by a window, it's lovely to be able to look out at the world around you as you do your chores, it makes it all a little bit more bearable. This sink is aged copper and lets anyone using it look out on to the bustling area of Clerkenwell, a lovely little area that houses both of our London showrooms.
The aged copper glistens as the sun streams through and the Clerkenwell Blue tinted cabinets look cool and effortless. The two contrasting colours and materials work so well together to create a space that feels glamorous and yet understated all at once.
