Straddling the city skyline, with a direct connect to the sky and the stars, the China Doll Restaurant design project in New Delhi offered OFIA the challenge of a huge 8000 square feet of prime real estate in one of the busiest markets of South Delhi. Sanjiv Malhan of OFIA, restaurant architect and interior designer par extraordinaire, has built a regal experience for the seasoned and sophisticated clientele who dine here. A majestic central wall rises up to culminate in a sky lit atrium creating a sense of vastness and allowing diners to commune with the natural space all around them.
Different levels, a hallmark of OFIA restaurant design projects, are used here as well, to create more intimate experiences and allow a feeling of spaces unfolding and yielding to explore. Natural walnut wood and timber panels are used extensively and very innovatively too. A finely etched, laser-cut floral motif on the paneled walls of natural walnut subtly makes its appearance in every dimension, drawing each part closer into a unified whole. The fabrics and other accessories are quietly rich, whether it is the spectacular central brass and steel fretwork chandelier or the water body that creates a spectacular design statement.
China Doll is a high-end fine dining Chinese Restaurant offering speciality Hunan Cuisine for discerning gourmet patrons, and the interiors are a worthy setting, designed to match the culinary sophistication of the dishes created by oriental maestros specially flown in from the old kingdom. An outdoor bar and Skywalk complement the water bodies, the stone and wood, offering an uplifting connect with the endless stretch of horizon. A living landscape of natural and fossilised plants, across the various spaces, softens the vastness and scale of this unique restaurant. Mr SanjeevKohli (TipuKohli), the restaurant owner, and an experienced restaurateur (he also owns the legendary MotiMahal Deluxe Restaurants in India and UK) was clear that he wanted to offer his guests an extraordinary dining experience.
The client is very happy with the result and his restaurant has received accolades from one of the country’s top food critics, VirSanghvi, who has described it as exceptional food served in a fine ambience. In fact, most reviews have praised the food as well as the refined and elegant restaurant interiors.
