Plank Residence

Taking this underutilized backyard and transforming it into an outdoor living space that the whole family could enjoy made this a truly enjoyable project to be a part of! This family loves spending time outside, but the full-blazing afternoon sun in their backyard prevented them from enjoying their space to its fullest. There was a need for a shaded private place to relax and entertain, so we accommodated the duality by creating designated areas for both without a feeling of separation.

After removing the existing weed-riddled paver patio, we installed a neutral colored stamped concrete patio and walkway as a low-maintenance replacement. Extending the patio past the roofline and removing the old shrubbery along the walkway, allowed the new path and patio to feel more expansive and welcoming. The neutral browns and tans of the patio play perfectly against the wrap-around drystack stone seating walls that double as extra seating for guests, as well as a clean “room” delineation. The area designated for the lounge furniture and fire table is perfect to curl up to that special someone on those chilly nights, but is versatile enough to become extra entertainment space when hosting a larger get-together!

To provide the clients with protection from the sun and seasonal elements, we implemented a lean-to roof system for shade and shelter. The ceiling fans allow for a much-welcomed steady breeze during the warmer months, and the fixed skylights to allow for the natural sunlight to flood back into the house during the day. However, nighttime is when this backyard really comes alive!

The dimmable recessed LED lighting in the roof system provides ample, yet warm light for everything from reading the newest novel to hosting a sit-down dinner with friends and family. LED under-cap lighting was installed along the seating walls for an added feeling of luxury, while also providing the space with textural interest. The beautiful surrounding landscaping is strategically lit by the low voltage lighting system to create a soft, subtle ambiance to tie everything together.

Creating a 3D, full-color model for this client was a great way to show how the space will look and function before one blade of grass was touched in the backyard.  Our goal was so transform the backyard space from full and direct sun, to a shaded and lush environment ready to be enjoyed at any time of day.

The new walkway and side entrance is much more welcoming now that the overgrown plants have been removed and there is a shaded area to retreat to.  Tropical annuals were added to the large planters at the entryway, which gives a relaxing, almost vacation feel to the backyard.

The roof system gives ample shade to protect from the scorching midday sun, but the skylights allow just enough light to filter back through, as to not make the inside of the house too dark.

The entry way is even more welcome at night!  The walkway has ample path lights to light the way, and at the same time, highlights the landscaping for added landscape drama.

The dimmable recessed lighting can take the space from bright and alive to low and subtle with the turn of a dial.  Outdoor lighting is key to ambiance and mood.

The portable fire table is the quintessential element for this living space's versatility. This fire feature can be relocated during larger parties, to make room for more guests, or can be enjoyed in its own little area of the patio, creating a nice cozy atmosphere.
