This is a stunning 8 bed house set in 8 acres which had not been touched for many years, with clients who understood design and who trusted both their own instincts and our proposals. The house stood in a position where the land fell away from it, which is one of the most favourable vistas to design with. When everything was finished you could stand on the terrace with the formal borders and topiary, look down a pleached lime tree avenue and see first the sunken terraced garden and then further on the newly created lake, which was edged with waterside planting amidst a sea of established rhodedendrons.
The courtyard garden was designed as a reflection of the orangery's glass panels and was planted with herbs and roses all edged with box hedging; a sweet smelling every day entrance to the house. In addition there was a vegetable garden with a lavender parterre based on a design from the Palais de Versailles, a tennis court, a swimming pool, a wild flower meadow, a blue bell wood and a reflective Japanese pool in the woods below the lake.
The client said he wanted to enjoy the garden in full from the start, so much of the planting was mature and everything looked wonderful immediately. Instant gratification!
