The steeply sloping and highly-visible site represented a significant planning challenge—it is located within an AONB, on the edge of a SSSI and on the outskirts of a World Heritage Site.

The building form derives from the environmental constraints of the site, running approximately east-west along its contours. The roof of the upper storey slopes away from the hillside, preserving the views of the houses behind and reducing the visible height from across the valley.

The dwelling was designed with best sustainable practice in mind, using a combination of active and passive sustainable technologies:

Carbon Sequestering Materials, chiefly timber; were chosen as the primary structure and cladding. Straw Insulation; gives excellent breathability, thermal inertia and insulation, combined with negative embodied carbon.

Thermal Mass; the concrete floor slab serves to regulate temperature fluctuations (NB: the concrete contains recycled pulverised fuel ash). MVHR System; provides fresh air and climate control, while also reducing heating (and cooling) requirements.

Solar PV panels; A brise-soleil of solar pv panels generate c.2kW electricity and help to shade the living area. Solar Water Heating; a roof mounted solar water panel warms the domestic hot water.

EV Charging Point; is provided at the front of the property. Rainwater Harvesting; from the roof of the dwelling is filtered and stored for use on the garden. Composting Toilet; in the studio is odourless and requires no chemicals, additives, electricity or sewer connection.

Ecology / Biodiversity; enhanced by a biodiverse sedum roof, species rich planting, native woodland, herb / vegetable garden and bat / dormouse boxes.

The result is a sustainable and responsible family home which is respectful of its surroundings, whilst allowing its users to enjoy the truly stunning location.
