The site that has only the area of approximately 55 square meters sits in the downtown dwelling area of the small city block in Tokyo.

The narrow site is facing the small alley that people only go through almost. We tried to get much more living space effectively in the small building, by putting circulation spaces less as much as possible. In the whole volume of the small building, the internal spaces that have the different ceiling heights were stacked vertically, and were linked by spiral stair directly without a corridor. The most important family living area including kitchen and dining space was placed on the upper part of the building, resulting to getting openness thanks to enough ceiling height and thanks to natural light from high windows. In the lower part of the building, bed room, play room, sanitary space and storage were placed. And in order to be able to live comfortably among the limited area we tried to create fluidity of the internal space by providing void in horizontal and vertical direction around the spiral stair, and by providing openings in many directions. Between the upper and the lower part, the loft space finished by lauan plywood and exposed wood frames was installed also being linked by the spiral stair directly.  The active and joyful atmosphere is brought, by the various vista in response to dweller's position around the void. The roof of the building was built to be settled in a slanted line limited in height regulation of The Building Standard Law . The facade formed by lines of the roof, eave, railings, eaves ceiling and wall made in different angles was designed to look various different shapes in response to pedestrian's position. architect : yukinobu nanashima + tomomi sano / atelier HAKO architects                                 structural engineer: shin’itsu hiraoka / hiraoka structural engineers  photographer : atelier flor, atelier HAKO architects all images courtesy of atelier HAKO architects  structure : wooden construction, two stories above ground   site area: 54.89 m2  building area: 32.84 m2  total floor space: 63.03 m2
