Chennai International Airport (IATA: MAA, ICAO: VOMM) serves the South Indian city of Chennai. The airport is located in the Meenambakkam, Pallavaram, and Tirusulam suburbs. During the fiscal year 2014-15, it is the fourth busiest airport in India in terms of passenger traffic, trailing only Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, and the third busiest in terms of foreign traffic and cargo handling, trailing only Delhi and Mumbai Airport. The airport handled 14.29 million passengers and 342 aircraft operations per day in 2014-15. The Chennai Airport Pin Code is scheduled to achieve capacity between 2016 and 2017, necessitating the development of a second airport.
The History Behind
The domestic and international terminals are named after former Tamil Nadu chief ministers K. Kamaraj and C. N. Annadurai, respectively. It is India's first airport with international and domestic terminals placed next to each other.
The airport acts as the Airports Authority of India's (AAI) regional headquarters for the southern area of India, which includes the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Karnataka, and Kerala, as well as the union territories of Puducherry and Lakshadweep.
The airport is served by 10 local airlines and 28 foreign carriers. SpiceJet, Jet Airlines, Air Costa, Blue Dart Aviation, and Air India all use the airport as their primary hub. It is also a hub city for GoAir and IndiGo. Blue Dart Aviation, located at Chennai International Airport, is an all-cargo airline. It offers regular overnight express freight flights as well as domestic and regional charters.
Construction of a new domestic terminal and extension of the present international terminal are among the ongoing development initiatives. The design is the result of a joint effort between Frederic Schwartz Architects, Gensler, and the New Delhi-based Creative Group. The lead architect for the project is Creative Group, which provides full architecture and engineering consulting for the design of the passenger terminal buildings, parking garage structures, and access highway access system.
The suggested design will be linked to the existing terminal design features and is based on Gensler's Terminal 2015 concept. According to previous reports, the new terminal buildings would have a handling capacity of 10 million passengers and, when combined with current terminals, will have a handling capacity of 23 million passengers per year. The new terminal buildings will be around 1,40,000 m2 in size, with 104 check-in desks, 16 aerobridges, and 60 immigration counters, and the two runways will be linked by a network of taxiways.
