Vertical planting options

Vertical planting is one of the newest and best ways to use the vertical space in both your home and your garden.  Vertical planting can be close together so you can't see the base structures of the wall, or can be spaced further apart as seen here!

The use of bamboo is also great because of its eco-friendly nature and connection with sustainability—it also has some lovely natural brown hues.

Wooden trellis

Trellis has been around for centuries and is actually one of the oldest examples of vertical planting if you really think about it.

Originally used to guide vine up royal palace walls and courtyards, now trellis can be used on the sides of your home, the interior of your patio or balcony or to create a stand-alone back yard garden wonderland.

Built-in planters

Below are some great examples of stand-alone planters and for corner usage—here we have classic built-in planters that various square shapes. This change in shape of the planters allows the homeowner to plant larger ferns in the larger boxes and more dainty flowers in the smaller ones. Take note of the wooden bars attached to the wall—this is an attractive way to get your vines and other greenery to grow up and out for a great design technique.

For stand-alone planters, why not construct some easy herb holders with raw, cheap wood for a perfect rustic feel?

Creative corners!

Pesky corner space is something you probably tend to sit and stare at, wondering what you can do to use every meter of space.  It's difficult enough in your home to figure this out, let alone outdoors!

This design goes to show just what you can do with some bamboo scraps, some potting soil and greenery.  Always make sure when planting up against your home that you have proper drainage—especially if you take the designs up to the windows.

Timber seating and storage

Similar to the built-in planters you saw above, you can also add a timber top and make for great, permanent seating.  Make sure to properly sand and seal all wood to avoid splinters and injury.

This small patio is really fantastic because of the different levels—you have tall white fencing for privacy and the higher grey wall separating the greenery from the lower benches which adds a special visual touch. Whenever you decide to change things up, you could always stain the wooden bench a different shade and the whole look of the entire patio would change!

Tip: If you decide on timber bench seating, why not make the top removable and give yourself extra patio storage?
