Of all the rooms in a house, the kitchen probably gets redecorated the most. Given the amount of time you spend here, it’s easy to get bored with how the kitchen looks. Decorating a kitchen can give it a fresh lease of life, and make cooking a more enjoyable experience. Thinking of redecorating can be daunting if you plan on building extensions, or completely changing the layout of your kitchen. However, not all kitchen renovation projects have to last weeks and months for them to have a lasting effect. Sometimes, even a small change when done correctly can have a big impact on the kitchen. So here are a few quick ways with which you can get started on your kitchen redecoration adventure.

Change the colour of the walls

Time and again, paint has proved to be a decorator’s best friend. Not only does changing the colour of your kitchen walls give it a new look, it does so without burning a hole in your pocket. When picking a colour palette to redecorate a kitchen, choose bold bright colours that are invigorating and exciting. Shades of red, orange and yellow are ideal hues to perk up a kitchen too. However, also be aware that bright colours can make the kitchen look more compact. So, if you are already struggling with space in your kitchen, you may want to choose a lighter colour palette and use bold colours as highlights. You can also use a bold vinyl backed wallpaper to accent a wall in the kitchen. Refresh cabinet doors

When you undertake a kitchen renovation project, take a look at your cabinet doors to determine if they are strong enough to be simple refaced or if they need to be changed completely. An easy way of refacing doors on your kitchen cabinets is to paint the doors a bright colour that complements the fresh wall colours. If your cabinet doors are made of wood, you may want to re-polish it in order to show off the natural grains.  If the doors need to be changed, consider changing the style of your cabinet doors. Alternatively, change the door to a glass door or remove it completely to show off the cabinet’s contents.

Move stuff to organise the space differently

From rice cookers and microwaves to toasters and food processors, the kitchen hosts a lot of electrical equipment. To give your kitchen a fresh look without spending a bomb, consider simply reorganizing your kitchen equipment. Move pieces that you do not use regularly so as to keep them out of sight, and give your kitchen countertops more space to breathe. As far as possible, keep your countertop space uncluttered and minimal. Also, take a look at your spice canisters, cutlery racks etc. and arrange them to be more organized and pleasing to the eye. Using the same type and size of bottles for spices and condiments can often give the kitchen a more planned and harmonious look.

Change the materials

In most instances, paint can be used only on plaster or wood surfaces. Expanses such as tiled backsplashes and countertops cannot be painted. How then can these be given a new appearance in a kitchen renovation project? Changing the material completely may require the services of a contractor and can be heavy on the budget. A much cheaper alternative would be to use decals and vinyl stickers to give these surfaces a new look. You could even use stick on tiles which can save you the trouble of dealing with grout while giving you the same look as ceramic tiles. Installing a pegboard as a kitchen backsplash is another way of giving your kitchen counter a fresh look with added functionality.

Pay attention to details

Most kitchen cabinets and drawers have cheap, generic and boring handles. Add style to the kitchen by paying attention to small details like these when you redecorate the space. Ceramic knobs instantly add colour and ethnicity to a kitchen while DIY knobs made from bottle caps or wine corks give your kitchen a whimsical personality. Choose door handles and drawer knobs on the basis of your interior design style. If your kitchen has an industrial design, pick matt finished metal handles, while carved wooden handles are perfect to complement a rustic décor style. Look at other smaller elements of your kitchen décor such as faucets, soap dispensers etc. to uplift your kitchen.

Play with the lighting

Lights have a functional as well as aesthetic role to play in kitchen décor. Adding pendant lights can make your kitchen look brighter and more stylish. If your kitchen is big, you can even consider a small chandelier over the breakfast table or the kitchen island. Rope lights under the cabinets are also a good way of lighting up counter spaces without creating shadows. The number of light fixtures a kitchen needs depends on the size and layout of the kitchen. Also, keep in mind the colour scheme of your kitchen. Lighter colour walls reflect light making the space look bigger and brighter.

Express yourself coolly

The refrigerator is one of the biggest appliances in a kitchen, and can do more than just keep food fresh. Magnets are a budget friendly way of turning your refrigerator doors into a message board for your family. Alternatively, paint the entire refrigerator door with chalk board paint to create an expansive message board. Magnets are also an effective ways to use your refrigerator as a platform to display your children’s art.

As part of your kitchen renovation project, also look at how effectively you are using the space available to you. Take cabinet doors up to the ceiling to create more storage space. Building a cabinet or shelf over the refrigerator or building a slim sliding cabinet along the refrigerator will also help you to use space better. Adding collapsible furniture like a folding table and chairs can also instantly add charm to your kitchen while making the space more functional. Lastly, drape curtains over your windows to add colour and warmth to the kitchen, and consider dressing up your window sill with a container herb garden.
