The bedroom is the main source of coziness, privacy and comfort in any home. It's perhaps one of the only rooms in the home that isn't on constant display and due to that fact, it's solely your own. Your decor, your bedding, your art, your clothes, and everything that makes you, you! However, this doesn't mean that we don't want our bedroom to be special and stand out for those guests that we allow special access.
If you're feeling like your bedroom is rather
blah!—then we have some tips and tricks to help you spice it up, while maintaining a personal sense of style and efficacy. So you've tried fresh flowers and new bedding but still feel that it's bland? In order to make a true design difference in your bedroom you should consider the details—those small, peculiar items that will stand out to you time and time again every time you walk in either ready for a nap, or looking for a change of clothes. We have listed six special design features that we promise will transform your bedroom into a special collection of all that is you!
For a truly unique feel in your bedroom (and your home in general, for that matter!) leave mass-produced, cheap art and graphic prints at the store. Take time to go through your photo collection and select your favourites. We suggest you choose a theme—whether it be family portraits, a recent trip to Europe or pictures from a college experience—and narrow it down to 5-10 pictures for use.
Once you've narrowed down your selection of images, think about creative ways to hang them and what size frames/matting you will use to format them. Be strategic and mark all the measurements and try different arrangements—hanging photographs isn't a permanent fixture—so have fun with it! Once you've hung them in an original way, either over your bed, or on the largest wall in your bedroom, we promise you will feel a sense of accomplishment that no store-bought images and wall art could ever offer!
There are certain things a bedroom can never have enough of—pillows, high-quality bedding and throws for cold nights or cuddling sessions. We know there are tons of comfortable blanket options at most stores and for a decent price—but we suggest you be more creative and open with your blanket/throw options! For a special touch, think about artisanal blankets that are one-of-a-kind and rather affordable. You can find such special blankets at flea markets, artist markets, or your local weavers shop! The colours will be plentiful, it will be of a high-enough quality to last forever and no one around will have a blanket similar to yours!
The blanket pictured here is a perfect example of how beautiful, colourful and stylish a hand-woven blanket can be. A blanket such as this one can match almost any interior and bring colour into a room that's mostly neutral as well! So do some research, ask around and find that one, special blanket that you can keep in your family for decades to come!
Flowers, plants and succulents are some of our favourite design elements, and with the arrival of spring they are perhaps the only thing on our mind! Flower markets are open, supermarkets have fresh, new arrangements and seedlings are sprouting everywhere! If you're all about low-maintenance (and we understand if you are), go for tropical plants, succulents, and cacti that can go without water for several days or even several weeks! Talk to your local plant/gardening specialist for the best options for your bedroom window!
If you tend to use a lot of home-grown herbs in your cooking, why not also add some to your bedside window? Most herbs will grow great next to other plants and flowers, and some will even bring a fresh smell to your space—consider rosemary or thyme for a great, year-round scent.

Assuming that you have both great artificial and natural light options in your bedroom already, think about using lighting elements to play with your bedroom. With nightstand and vanity lighting already underway, consider placing one or two spotlights inside your wardrobe for a retail store-feel while choosing an outfit in the morning.
Wardrobe lights are super functional in that the light will make you feel alive and awake in the morning and help you go through all of your clothing options efficiently and thoroughly. This doesn't have to be an expensive endeavour—you can usually find spotlights and push-lights for a small price and installation can be done in just a few hours!
If you don't want to install permanent light fixtures in your wardrobe, then consider transparent, sliding doors for optimal lighting in your wardrobe—as pictured here!
As with most rooms in the home, curtains, sheers and blinds are typically overlooked. This is shocking considering how much of a difference they can make, and for a small budget!
We suggest for a special touch to your bedroom that you choose colourful curtains that are transparent in nature—letting all the natural light in your bedroom during all hours of the day. In a bedroom, privacy is a central concern and with transparent curtains you can make this happen while allowing natural light to filter into your space! If you prefer darkness at night or a pitch-black setting while sleeping, consider doubling up and placing sheers in the middle of your windows and thick/opaque curtains on the outer edges to use only while you're sleeping (as seen here).
Tip: To keep your window coverings budget-friendly, find materials that you like at a fabric/textile store, trim them to length and sew them yourself for the most cost-effective option!
Lastly, create a semi-living space in your bedroom. For those afternoons and late-evenings when you choose to read by candlelight, browse on your computer or have a three-hour phone conversation with those most important to you—you'll want a comfortable space to relax. When creating a cosy living room in the corner, think about a window bench, or one chair and a matching ottoman—and because this is your bedroom, make it über-comfy! Stack the space with colourful throws, plush pillows and small storage units for magazines, books and pictures. Want to go all out? Add a unique lamp for a finalizing touch!
