This colonial home in Merida, Mexico has been impeccably renovated by Taller Estilo Arquitectura. The simple language of form and proportion gives way to vibrant colours, intricate patterns and wonderful textures! The linearity is interrupted by gentle curves that punctuate the space—Curved archways and furniture elements imbue the space with a softness. The traditional and contemporary do not compete, but rather, the differences come together in a harmonious way. The dialogue between differences is thoughtfully considered throughout the design, creating a delightful dynamic—now let's take a look inside!
Enclosing a series of courtyards, the form of the home privileges the negative space in-between. These various spaces are populated with pools, terraces, outdoor furniture and immaculate landscaping—one might never want to actually go inside! Well, until you see the inside that is!
The large volumes of the living areas are grand, without being overpowering. The archways act to separate spaces without interrupting the connection between the freely flowing open plan space. Neutral tones are paired with rich earthy colours to create a space that is warm and inviting. The tiles add dramatic interest, which alongside the furnishings and artworks, give the space it's own personality.
Located off the main living space are smaller nooks and sitting areas. The variety of spaces create very different atmospheres that are suited to different uses. Again, rich earthy tones are employed which compliment the asperity of the concrete mantel and textural timber chairs.
The kitchen is just delightful! Opening onto both the indoor living areas of the home and one of the many courtyard spaces, it finds perfect connection. The large island bench implores to be gathered around, prioritising the kitchen as one of the social spaces in the home. The tiles in this space, while in a similar hue, take on a different pattern and size. This change in flooring tiles throughout the various spaces is a wonderful way to create distinction and individual identity.
Like the social spaces of the home, each of the bedrooms takes on it's own character. Here the steel, four-post bed sits proudly within the space. The bright pink wall draws the pick tones from the tiles and amplifies it in one dramatic stroke. For more bedroom ideas, both bold and subdued, take a look here!
This bedroom adopts a very different colour palette and aesthetic, yet it is equally as playful. The green bedspread picks up the hues of the trees, made visible by the opened shutters, and the blue band at the bottom of the walls further infuses the space with colour. The rooms inherent symmetry of form is carried right through to the furniture placement and wall hangings.
What an incredible bathroom! The full height glass wall creates a seamless transition between inside and out—one can feel feel as if they are bathing plein air! The gentle curve of the vanity and bath cut through the linearity of the space, talking to each other as they do so. Beautiful natural stone, concrete, and textured surfaces give the space a plush and haptic quality. For more wonderful bathroom ideas, although this one would be hard to beat, take a look here!
