Small homes are an increasing commodity on the property market due to increasing demand, stretched supply, and changing lifestyles. There's all sorts of reasons to choose a small home, whether it's to save money, move into the inner city, or because you no longer need that expansive family home. While it may seem like a downgrade for some, for many moving into a smaller home is a relief, and if you have ever downsized apartments there's one benefit that becomes immediately obvious; cleaning them is a breeze!

The issue of housekeeping tends to splits us into two categories, those who love a good tidy up, and those who absolutely hate it, but either way everyone appreciates their job becoming a little easier. That's why today we're looking at 14 reasons to love cleaning your small home. Small homes are far more convenient and easier to maintain than their bigger counterparts, and we're going to show you how.

1. There's not as much furniture collecting dust

When you live in a small home it's crucial that you don't pack it to the brim with furniture, cramping the space and making it feel even smaller. The upside of being more discriminatory in your furnishing choices is that there's far less places for dust to gather, making your life a whole lot easier.

2. Rearranging furniture is a breeze

When it's time for a serious spring clean one of the most taxing jobs is clearing out all of the furniture in order to get to those hard to reach spaces. But with a small home that job is simplified, with far less furniture to move. This is also great from a design perspective, as any time you want to reinvigorate a room you can rearrange the furniture with ease.

3. Vacuuming takes half the time

This one is simple arithmetic; less floor area means less vacuuming, and I think we can all agree that that's a major plus!

4. All your washing supplies are in one place

Having a small space tends to force people to arrange their home into areas that are defined by function. This means that you're laundry should look something like this, with everything you need cleverly arranged to fit into one place, and with everything right at hand cleaning is super convenient.

5. There's no hidden nooks and crannies

Larger homes tend to be filled with unused spaces that we can completely forget about, which usually results in those areas becoming particularly grimy. With a small home those places don't exist as every corner needs to be used in a practical way to maximise the space available.

6. Cleaning the bathroom doesn't feel overwhelming

Probably everyone's least favourite chore is cleaning the bathroom, but when it's as small as this one it feels like a walk in the park.

7. Clutter is more obvious

If you're the type throw your jacket on the couch or your mail on the dining room table then you know how quickly that mess can accumulate. When you live in a small home these little oversights are far more obvious, meaning you're far less likely to leave things lying around for more than a few minutes before you put it back in its proper place.

8. You're forced stay organised

If you're trying to fit all of your essentials into a small space, for example your toiletries, then it takes a little more organising than normal, but the upside is that it saves you a great deal of time in the long run.

9. Coming up with unique storage solutions

Small homes present storage challenges, but that's half the fun! Coming up with innovative ways to fit more storage into your home is exciting, and solutions like this bed that features a shoe rack and drawers beneath the mattress are exactly the kind of unique ideas that you would never think of in a larger home.

10. Multi-functional furniture simplifies the job

The same unique solutions we were just talking about result in far less individual items to deal with as you rely more on multi-functional furniture that's both an economical choice in terms of floor space, and the amount of time spent cleaning!

11. Open plan living areas are easy to mop

With hardwood floors you do need to break the mop out pretty regularly, but because small homes tend to use open plan living areas you can do most of the home in one go.

12. You know your home inside out

When you know exactly where everything is it's easy to keep a mental checklist, and make sure your not forgetting about any furniture or decorations that need a good clean.

13. You can easily prepare for unexpected guests

There's nothing worse than finding out you have imminent guests when the house is nowhere near ready. The benefit of having a small home is that even a quick clean will have a big impact, making your home ready for visitors at a moment's notice.

14. The satisfaction of a job well done

Cleaning a big home can be such an exhausting exercise that once you're finished you're too tired to appreciate the finished product. With a small home you're expending a fraction of the time and energy, and when you're done you can sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour.

There are so many benefits to small homes, and the ease of maintenance and upkeep is just one! If this has you interested in moving into a smaller place then you're going to want to check these fabulous houses out!
