As far as woodworking goes, building a simple deck is actually really easy.

Even though winter is doing its worst right now, we all know that the seasons will eventually turn and treat us to some nice outdoor temperatures within a few months – and that is when we’ll start coming up with excuses to spend more time outdoor, especially to socialise and entertain with the friends and family.

And for those happy occasions, a terrace is the perfect spot – a comfy little space at home that allows you to enjoy the fresh air and garden views while catching up on good company and even better snacks and drinks!

Today’s ‘before and after’ segment focuses on a family that decided to treat themselves to a brand new wooden deck – and decided to document the construction of it.

Let’s take a look…

1. The right location

First things first – the correct location had to be decided upon, one that would provide the owners with a nice view, optimum legroom and easy access to the house.

homify hint: If you’re wondering where to construct a terrace at home, opt for a space that’s free from vegetation and is not placed too close to trees – you don’t want to be raking up fallen leaves every other day!

2. Preparation starts

After the foundation has been laid, timber panels are placed to form the skeleton of the deck. The terrace had to achieve a certain height in order to meet up with the doors leading into the house – easy access, remember?

3. Planks are added

After the substructure and foundation are completed (made from stones and concrete slabs), the wooden planks are nailed to the surface.

Placing them vertically makes the deck look longer and more stretched out; and just see how striking that stone-grey hue contrasts with the fresh greens of the lawn and garden.

4. Cut to size

After all overhanging panels are cut to size, the deck starts to form a more uniform and neat look. The space is really starting to come together now!

5. Protection from the elements

As a deck is constantly exposed to the elements, it would be the wise choice to protect those wooden surfaces from wind, rain, dampness and harsh sunshine, not to mention mould and rot.

After applying the appropriate coating to the panels, the wooden deck becomes a practical space, allowing this fortunate family a marvellous spot for outdoor socialising and relaxation.
