In order to make your homes seem memorable, you don't always need to make them look grandiose or incredibly ornate. While those types of houses are often the ones that get noticed first, they may not necessarily be the ones that we will remembered in years gone by.

However, there are certain houses that will always stick in your head, no matter how old you are. It's these types of houses, that immediately make you feel welcome and wanted. But how do they do that, you may ask? Ultimately, it all comes down to the great architects and designers, that really give a house it's personality.

And below, we will explore just how much of that personality can come out in the build and colour of the home. From the bedroom, all the way to how the kitchen is set up, your house is telling a story. And if you wish to shape the way that story is being told, then maybe this article is just the inspiration you were looking for.

Sleeping on a feather

The bedroom is one of the most intimate rooms in anybody's house. It's where you're the most vulnerable and the most open. Your personality effects your bedroom, but your bedroom can also effect you. If you return to it after a long day at work, and find the colour or the design too distracting, chances are you'll get a bad night's sleep. As such, it's important to make sure that they way the room is set up is calming, in any situation.

And this effect is brilliantly created thanks to the tone of colour this room takes. Dealing with primarily bright and soft colours, every time you enter, you'll feel like you're walking into a cloud. This feeling of brightness is helped by a large window, that softens the whole room with even more with natural lighting.

The two things that primarily go against all of this airiness are the floor, and the chair in the corner. While you may think this spoils the mood, it's incredibly important to ground such a lofty room in earthy colours. Providing a great mix of both ease and security, another great feature of the darker colours, this room will be a dream to sleep in.

Guests in red

The title spoke of striking colours, and we here at homify don't like to disappoint. While the guest bedroom may only really fit one person, it immediately makes itself appealing thanks to the large red cabinet, that covers the bed like safety blanket. While red may be an odd choice for a bedroom, mainly because of it's connection with speed, red is also the colour of warmth, and there's not a better way to welcome your guests, than with the architectural equivalent of a nice warm hug.

While the cabinet does dominate the room, we shouldn't forget about the rest. The floor and the wallpaper follow the same styles as in the previous bedroom, setting up some continuity, and the dark brown chest of drawers adds a handy counterpoint to all that red. Finally, the window helps uplift all the colours, and the pillows add some interesting patterns to further entice guests. If you want people to feel welcome, presenting the architecture in the best light possible, is the way to go.

A living room deep in thought

These days, some living rooms can be crammed full of technology, to the point where nobody interacts with one another. While it is true that this is an extreme case, the fact still remains that a space in which people can just sit down and catch up is always needed. This room does a magnificent job of just that.

The room follows the set style of the whole apartment, darker floors and white walls, which have a nice calming effect on the occupant, making sure that conversation flows smoothly and freely. The striking red couch would probably be the thing that drew people's attention, were it not for the black reclining sofa, that looks like something out of Freud's own living room. And, if you're not interested in conversing, or have no one to talk to, the great wooden cabinet no doubt holds plenty of books, meaning that you could read away the day, uninterrupted by any twittering technology.

Light conversation

Another way to approach the living room as a space for communication is by setting up two opposing couches. This allows for more people to enter the conversation, and with the way that they are placed, anyone who is talking can see everyone else, allowing for a proper discussion on equal footing.

To help open the room, and the people, up the main colour here is a bright shade of yellow. This shade mixes well with the rest of the decor, and really makes the room feel more personal and energetic. Once again, just like with the bedroom, the chest of drawers is there to bring the whole room down to earth, with it's deep brown colour. And finally, we can't forget the large window that makes the whole room feel even cheerier. If you plan on having guests over, this is a great set up to place them in.

Bright cooking

When working with small spaces, it's always important to do it with a smile on your face. And, admittedly, that can be difficult sometimes. However, this kitchen and dining room combo have managed to do it, using one simple thing: the colour yellow. With all of the cabinets, and even some things on the table, sporting this cheery shade you won't be able to stop yourself from smiling.

Outside of the colour, the kitchen does it's best to work with the space provided, by trying to become of compact as possible. Pretty much everything you will need can fit into the cabinets, leaving plenty of work space on the counter. What's more, the stove will help expand on the possible dishes you can make. If you can't have a large space to work in, you can at least have a large menu to work with.

Furthermore, the dining room also adapts the the space, the selection of tables and chairs being primarily light brown, so as to blend in with the white tile background as much as possible. Sometimes, you have to make the most with what you're dealt, and these designers show you just how easy it can be.

And, if you're still looking for more inspiration on how to use colours in your home, a tour through an equally cosy apartment, may be just the thing.
