Small homes, student housing, studio-living and even communal housing are just some of the many living situations people find themselves in. When convenience and budget are of top concern, you might feel that you've had to sacrifice some other things—but this doesn't have to be the case! With a few proper storage systems and techniques, you can have everything you want in your small home and within accessible reach.

These clever storage solutions will have you saying Wow! as you look through them!  So, in preparation for seasonal and lifestyle changes, take a look and get organised!

1. Shelving

We'll start this article out with a more traditional option, yet one that is tried and true. Shelving is customisable, flexible and adaptable to almost any environment and home size. Floor-to-ceiling shelving is great for a dramatic and luxurious look and if you happen to be a book lover, or have children, this might the best (and cheapest) option! Use lower shelves for items that children use on a daily basis and keep books, accessories and decor on upper shelves so they're out of reach for the younger ones!

2. Partition storage

Partitions are a great addition to small homes in order to separate and divide living space and areas, but did you ever consider them for storage? This partition, separating the bedroom from the entry way, is equipped with small shelves to hold clothing and linens and we love it!

3. Underbed storage

Elevated beds are a great way to add some extra storage space to smaller homes, student housing and studio living. Either choose shelving, pull-out units or baskets and boxes as a means for a place to put anything from books, to seasonal clothing. There are even sofas that provide a lot of storage space now as well! Never underestimate the power of furnishings!

4. Creative corner storage

Don't let corners be unused space in your small home—these are essential and prime areas of real estate when it comes to creative thinking, DIY projects and proper storage techniques. This wonderful shelving unit is perfect for both display and storage! Here, it's seen in light wood, but you could easily paint and design this piece in any way you choose for a truly customised look!

This article has some great ideas for what to do with corner space!

5. Strategic cabinetry

In smaller spaces you have to be more clever and a small ktichen is certainly one of those spaces. Functional cabinet inserts and cabinetry will be a lifesaver in a small ktichen! Consider pullout drawers and organisers as to not have to change your cabinetry, but just to spruce it up a bit as seen here!

6. Plate racks for smaller kitchens

Or, you can forget cabinetry all together if your home is too small! Plate racks are a great modern and minimal way to make sure everything you need in your ktichen is accessible and on display for all to see! Have cute, matching plates and cappuccino cups? Show them off with a great stainless steel plate rack like here!

7. Multifunctional furnishings

Is it a shelf? A display cabinet? A desk? Well, obviously it's all three and it's the perfect size for small-to-medium sized homes! Check out local stores and designers and see if they have, or are willing to make customised pieces like this that will allow you to store all that you need in small, functional furnishings. This homeowner has saved a ton of space by combining three functional areas (display, decor, work) all in one piece.

8. Knobs, hooks and other helpers

In smaller homes you're probably looking to save on leg room—knobs and hooks are a great way to do this. Forget screwing in traditional metal hooks and bar systems—knobs and hooks are aesthetically pleasing as well now! Better yet, join in on a weekend DIY project and paint your own hooks and randomly place them on the wall (like here) for a cute look! This article shows you even more ways to add fun hooks to your home!

There are so many beautiful and fun ways to equip your small home with proper storage and homify is always here to help!
