This modular eco house was designed by UK-based Build Different, a pre-fabricated design company who do most of the 'building' in their factory, for a faster, simpler and more cost-effective way to build. Their philosophy is centred around designing, building and delivering 'unique, high quality, low energy, sustainable buildings'.

The apply passive solar principals to their modular constructions, using 3D modelling, 3D printing and Sefaira energy analysis software which allows them to cleverly optimise their designs. They even include smart home technologies, such as implementing smartphone and tablet control to enable the various features.

Let's take a look at some images of the modular eco house to better understand they way in which sustainable principals and technologies have been incorporated.

The exterior construction

Schoolmasters, a low-energy eco house, was designed by Stuart Duncan. On the most part, it was built off-site using their innovative modular construction techniques.

Prefabrication inside a factory can eliminate delays due to bad weather. It also reduces waste, stabilises costs, and thus enables a more sustainable building process.

Double-height volume

The design adds a little grandeur to the single storey home with a lofty double-height entrance.

The double-height space also includes a sitting room with pellet stove at the end. It's a cosy nook from which one can enjoy views of the garden from the warm retreat of the interior.

Passivhaus design

The home is built according to Passivhaus standards, which means that a comfortable living environment is created with very little energy consumption. Orienting the main facade south allows the home to make the most of solar gain.

A highly airtight structure, with triple glazing and mechanical ventilation, keeps the heat that is captured from the sun and biomass pellet stove inside over the cold winter months.

Smart tech and minimal aesthetic

And, what's more, the latest in state of the art smart home technology means that the homes features and functions can be controlled from a tablet or smartphone.

The interior design is sleek and minimal. The all-white aesthetic is punctuated by bold colours and patterns in the furnishings.

Minimalist kitchen

The entire home follows a minimalist M.O, but the kitchen is particularly sleek and refined. The white, handleless cabinetry is contrasted by dark stone bench tops. It is a very generous space, that is open and connected to social heart of the home.
