While some may be content with a plain, cookie cutter home in an uninspiring suburban neighbourhood, there are others who create truly distinctive homes with incredibly imaginative materials and shapes.

Here we have  gatheres 14 mind-blowing examples of architecture that range in all styles from linear and geometric to organic and humbling. These homes look nothing like the boxy houses or apartments most of us live in. They're Avant Garde and visionary. So keep reading if you love extraordinary design ideas!

1. Quaint and quirky cabana-style home

The architects at Joao Diniz Aquitetura really did an imaginative number on this pint-sized home. The curvaceous arcs and small protruding columns holding up the roof attribute a cabana-like quality to the structure–nothing like my plain Jane apartment!

2. Reflective surfaces

Ingenious, original, and visionary are the only words we can seem to find to describe this fascinating home. We often use mirrors inside the home in order to make a room seem more open, brighter, and more spacious, doing so by reflecting the decor around them.

This is the characteristic that inspired these architects to create this mirrored façade. It's definitely a curious concept and no better way to make a house blend in with its surroundings.

3. Concrete and strong

This cubic concrete building shows real creativity. The frame of the structure transitions seamlessly into the terrace underneath protruding windows and then further to the connecting swimming pool. And we just love the blue tinted lights that reflect the water colour onto the concrete wall behind it.

4. Far world design

This home seems to draw some of its inspiration from traditional Japanese homes. The customary gently curved roof reminds us of a new-age Japanese style, but with an interesting twist. The block shaped wooden façade blends with the neighbouring brick, which in turn complements the vegetation that is spread out on each level. The spotlights finish the look and attribute a magical quality.

5. Green, green, green

Now we've never seen a home quite like this! And certainly the most nature-inspired home we've seen. Having a lawn on your second storey balcony is like having an up-close-and-personal extension of nature right up to your door.

6. On a new level

This home takes geometry to a whole new level with its differentiating decks. Clean lines, a pristine white façade, and black accents make this a very modern home, and the distinguishing shape makes it unique.

7. Let there be light

The architects at k-m Architektur saw the opportunity to open up a home, and they took it. With nearly half of the surface area of the home consisting of windows, this home is more connected to the outside than most could ever dream of. The timber cladding reinforces this relationship and adds uncanny style.

8. Patchwork style

This quirky little home gives us a fantastic fairy tale-like impression. The patchwork façade and square and rectangular windows seem to blend into the calming forest background.

9. Looking glass home

Here we have another powerful example of using reflective surfaces in architecture. Almost spellbinding, this home draws us in with its impeding, impenetrable exterior. And the white orb resting on the lawn is a wonderful modern decor addition to the property.

10. Industrial

The industrial style really lets any architect or designer go wild with their imagination. Using neutral tones, utilitarian objects, and wood and metal surfaces, this design results in a warehouse look that blends a true industrial feel with earthy traces.

11. Retro red accents

We all know how an accent wall can intensify a room and bring it to life. Well, these architects took that idea and applied it to the exterior. A bright red accent was given to a second storey quadrant that is being held up by a mysterious V-shaped support. This whole façade screams retro and is quite the envy of the neighbours.

12. Nature inspired

Here we have another nature inspired home, but this time, the space is even more integrated into nature. The unique rhombus shape of this pint-sized home almost buries itself into the ground, and the healthy green grass growing over the top creates an out-of-the-ordinary terrace space. The tiled walkway in front tops of the whole look.

13. Cubic timber

Timber is a loved architectural material, and here we see it implemented perfectly. This cubic home fashioned from wood gives new meaning to geometric homes. We're used to seeing such buildings made from materials such as concrete. But here, it gives a softer impression, but an impactful one nonetheless.

14. Imposing glass

The last home we want to show you uses glass in a very inventive way. The first and second storey of the front of the home is a giant glass case. This incredible design adds so much life to the interior, while also creating a stylish and imposing façade.
